Overcoming Challenges

The word “overcoming” suggests there’s an obstacle to face. We all face challenges, to varying degrees, and sometimes it feels like the obstacles are unique to me. But as an Echelon Front instructor, I’ve learned that our challenges, though different in details, are fundamentally the same.

All our problems are leadership problems that can be solved by applying the principles of Extreme Ownership. I want to overcome the challenges in my professional and personal life, and I’m confident that these principles are the best tools to help me do that. Here are a few ways we can reframe our thinking to help us overcome challenges in all areas of life.

Break It Down: Segmenting Challenges

When faced with a challenge, the whole situation can feel overwhelming. Breaking down a challenge into smaller steps makes each step more manageable and leads to a sense of accomplishment. Taking small, steady steps creates progress, builds momentum, and boosts our confidence.

Believe

Belief is the foundation of overcoming any challenge. We must ask ourselves, “Why is it important to overcome this obstacle? What purpose does all the effort serve?” When we believe in the mission and in ourselves, we project confidence and resilience. And if we don’t understand the mission, it is incumbent upon us to ask questions to figure out the why. Knowing the mission gives us a goal to aim for and when we believe in that goal, we are much more likely to achieve it.

Focus on What We Can Control

When facing challenges, it’s easy to focus on things beyond our control, leading to frustration and helplessness. Instead, let’s focus on what we can control—ourselves. By concentrating on our actions, reactions, words, and choices, we maintain a sense of control and purpose, helping us move forward.

Have Fun

Challenges can overshadow the fun in our lives, but just because a challenge exists doesn’t mean we can’t have fun along the way. Having fun helps us keep things in perspective and gives us strength. We can laugh and enjoy the journey, which lightens the load and makes the monotony or difficulty of the process easier.

Be Disciplined

At Echelon Front, we teach that Discipline Equals Freedom. Self-discipline is the key to overcoming challenges because it builds inner strength. The ability to overcome challenges starts with consistent discipline, especially in the small, unseen things. Self-discipline sets us up for success and clears the path to overcome obstacles more easily.

Cover & Move: Building Supportive Relationships

Overcoming challenges alone is almost impossible. Strong relationships are crucial, especially during tough times. We all have someone who has supported us through a challenge, and for me, that’s made all the difference. Remembering that everyone faces challenges reminds us that we’re not alone. A supportive community and professional help give us the strength to keep going. At Echelon Front, we call this “Cover & Move.” By supporting each other, we can move forward together.

Detach: Gain Perspective

When a challenge is all we see, it’s easy to get caught up in emotions and lose sight of the bigger picture. Detachment doesn’t mean indifference; it means stepping back to gain clarity and perspective. By taking a moment to breathe and assess the situation objectively, we can make better decisions and avoid unnecessary stress.

Tell the Truth

Honesty is a powerful tool in overcoming challenges. When we see a challenge for what it really is, we gain a more objective perspective. It’s important to be truthful about our strengths, weaknesses, and how we may have contributed to the challenge. Being honest fosters integrity and authenticity, which are essential in navigating any challenge. As our CEO, Jocko Willink, once stated: “The answer when the truth hurts…is MORE TRUTH”.

Hang On Just a Little Longer

When we feel like giving up, remember that perseverance often makes the difference between success and failure. Challenges can be exhausting, but pushing through just a little longer can lead to breakthroughs. In these moments of resilience, we discover our true strength.

Take Extreme Ownership

Taking extreme ownership means accepting full responsibility for our actions and decisions. It’s about owning our part in any situation and our responses. By taking action, seeking solutions, and avoiding excuses, we empower ourselves to shape our path and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

Case Study

The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) overcame the challenges from their 2023 World Cup disappointment by embracing new leadership under coach Emma Hayes. She instilled a focus on the principles we teach at Echelon Front: Cover & Move, Innovate and Adapt, and Extreme Ownership. Hayes prioritized team chemistry by sticking with a core group of players, allowing them to develop the cohesion needed to face tough opponents. Despite physical and mental fatigue, the team persevered, particularly in the final against Brazil, where their ability to adapt to the style of play and determination paid off with a 1-0 victory. By taking ownership, being honest about and learning from their previous shortcomings, the USWNT successfully navigated the challenges to win the 2024 Olympic gold medal.

Conclusion

Overcoming challenges is a journey of growth, resilience, and empowerment. But to experience this transformation, we must go through the process. By adopting the principles of Extreme Ownership, we can navigate obstacles with confidence and inspire others to do the same. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become better a better person and leader.
