Leaders set the example. Leadership is all about setting the example, not just giving orders. It’s about every once in a while, getting your hands dirty, and being right there in the trenches with your team. This allows you to understand your team’s perspective and builds trust and respect. Management, on the other hand, oftentimes lacks the initiative to get outside of their comfort zone, to periodically get into the trenches with the team. Sadly, it can be the case that managers can demand a standard that they do not meet.

Leaders take responsibility for their actions, decisions, and the growth of their team. They’re open to new ideas, encourage creativity, and create an environment where innovation thrives.

Management finds safety in the status quo. The manager, like the bureaucrat, is not interested in thinking outside of the box. Management’s tendency is to stifle creativity.

How Is Empowerment Different Between Leadership and Management?

Leaders Empower. Empowerment is a game-changer in leadership. It means giving your team autonomy and ownership of their work. Leaders provide guidance and support but trust their team members to handle tasks and solve problems on their own. This not only boosts morale but also empowers the team to take accountability. The best leaders I have worked for would arm me with the overall mission or goal and parameters in which I could work. These parameters keep the plan legal, ethical, safe, and within certain cost constraints. I flourished under this style of leadership, and it allowed my leaders to look up and out as opposed to telling me exactly how to complete a task.

On the flip side, management often involves a top-down approach, where decisions come from the higher-ups and trickle down to the team. This can be efficient in some in the short term, but in the long term, the manager will never fully harness the potential of the team and their creativity. The truth is that folks closest to the problem will give you the best solution. The manager will always be tied to looking down and in.
